A baby crib in addition to a bassinet is considered the safest place for your baby to sleep. Make sure you read up on these safe sleep guidelines published by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It will help you learn and become familiar with how to put baby to sleep safely.
2. DO YOU NEED A CRIB AND A BASSINET
Once again, we refer to the American Academy of Pediatrics which recommends parents share a room with the baby for at least the first six months but preferably up to a year. However, the baby should sleep on a separate sleep surface from the parents. You could move the crib to your bedroom but most parents prefer to get a bassinet and use that instead.
3. HOW DO YOU CHOOSE A CRIB FOR BABY?
When choosing a crib for baby, crib safety always comes first. Be sure to use a crib manufactured after June 2011, when the current crib safety standards were issued, banning the manufacture or sale of drop-side rail cribs.

The crib mattress should be very firm and should not sag under your baby's weight.
The crib mattress should fit snugly, with no space between the mattress and the crib walls.
The sides of the crib should be at least 26 inches above the mattress when it's in the lowest position.
