The Heritage Nursery Style Guide

By Tira, founder of Nursery Design Studio · 450+ nurseries designed since 2017 · Updated October 2026

A Ralph Lauren–inspired nursery should feel like a well-loved country house, not a showroom. Heritage Classic is one of my eleven nursery styles, and it comes in four moods parents ask me for by name: Ralph Lauren–inspired, Americana prep, English country and equestrian. Warm walnut, linen, forest green and navy, a classic pattern or two, and pieces that look as if they could be handed down. This guide is how I design each of them, with 37 heritage nurseries from our studio.

The free quiz takes about 2 minutes. Your first board is free.

How to build a heritage nursery, layer by layer

The order I design in, from the walls in. Nest fills in the exact paints and pieces for your room.

Walls

This style loves a classic wall. A plaid, a toile, a small check or a vintage-inspired floral, in two or three soft colours on a linen or cream ground. If you'd rather paint, panelling or wainscoting in a soft blue, a deep forest or a warm taupe gives the same tailored feeling, with a quiet paper above if you want both.

Floor

A traditional rug grounds the room: a faded vintage-style pattern, a soft stripe or a wool flatweave in cream, rust, taupe or navy, sized so the front feet of the crib, dresser and glider sit on it. One pattern on the floor is enough when the walls have one too.

Windows

Tailored, not frilly. Linen or velvet panels in cream, olive or forest, hung high and wide on a simple rod, or a pleated panel with a contrast trim. Blackout lining keeps naps easy.

Furniture

Walnut and warm wood are the heart of it: a spindle or classic panel crib, a traditional dresser with brass hardware, perhaps a vintage-style metal crib in gold or soft white. Pieces that look as if they could be handed down are exactly right.

Textiles

This is where the prep comes in. A gingham or check pillow, a cable knit throw, a stripe on the crib sheet, a glider in bouclé, linen or a leather-look trim. Keep every pattern in the same small family of colours so they sit together.

Light

A classic shape over the crib and glider: a pleated or fabric shade, a simple brass fitting, a milk glass globe. Warm bulbs and a dimmer make the room glow like a library at dusk.

Art and the wall over the crib

Collected, not themed. A vintage-style horse or hound, an old map, a sailing boat, a framed botanical. One or two pieces hung low enough to relate to the crib, ideally in wood or brass frames.

A Ralph Lauren–inspired nursery

A Ralph Lauren–inspired nursery is the classic American heritage look made soft enough for a baby. I start with a pattern that feels tailored rather than cute: a deep green or navy plaid, a menswear check or a fine stripe, on the walls or the glider. Then warm walnut and dark oak furniture with turned or panelled detail, brass light, a touch of leather and a cream or camel ground so the deep colours feel cosy, not heavy. The art is where the personality comes in: a vintage-style horse or hound, a classic teddy-bear print, an old sporting picture, framed in wood or brass. Keep the palette to navy, forest, camel, cream and walnut, and the room reads collected and timeless, a nursery that could be handed down, never a costume.

An Americana prep nursery

An Americana prep nursery takes its cue from the American country house and the classic prep wardrobe: crisp stripes, checks and plaids, navy and red with cream, warm wood and a little brass. It's sporty and cheerful but still calm, because the colours are slightly faded and every pattern stays in the same small family. I like one strong anchor, a menswear plaid paper or a striped wall, then a deep red or navy rug, a plaid or ticking-stripe glider and collected-feeling art: little flags, vintage illustrations, a pennant or a sailing print. Pair a black metal or warm-wood crib with brass and wood, and the room feels like a modern American classic that grows easily into a big-kid room.

An English country nursery

An English country nursery has the gentle, collected feeling of an old country house. It leans on pattern with history: a houndstooth or a small check, a vintage-inspired floral, a soft toile, often above panelling or half-wall moulding in a deep, rich colour. The furniture is warm oak or walnut with curves and turned legs, or a weathered white crib with crown detail, and the textiles are layered and lived-in: bouclé, velvet, linen and a faded rug. Light comes from woven shades, milk glass and small lamps, glowing like a library at dusk. Keep the colours muted, sage, forest, brown, cream and a dusty rose, and let one or two vintage-style portraits or florals finish it. It suits a boy or a girl, and it never dates.

An equestrian nursery, with horse art

An equestrian nursery is heritage style with a love of horses at its heart, and the secret is restraint. Horses belong in the art, not on every surface: one or two soft horse sketches or a vintage-style portrait over the crib or dresser says it beautifully. Let the rest come from the stable and the tack room: a check or pinstripe, warm walnut and oak, a hint of leather or brass, a rug with a faded Persian pattern and deep, earthy walls in forest, near-black green or stone. A gold metal crib or a natural oak crib both work. The result feels tailored and grown-up rather than themed, a nursery for a horse-loving family that still feels calm at three in the morning.

Heritage in a small nursery

  • Put the pattern on one wall or above the panelling only, so a plaid or toile frames the room without closing it in.
  • Choose a lighter ground: a cream or linen-backed paper keeps the classic pattern and lets the room breathe.
  • Let one deep colour carry the drama, on the panelling or the curtains, not on every surface.
  • A rug that leaves about six inches of floor at the walls makes the room read bigger, not smaller.

Mistakes that make it look themed

  • Red buffalo check everywhere. It reads seasonal; keep plaid in softer tones and one or two places.
  • Too many patterns fighting. Plaid, toile, floral and stripe can mix, but only in the same small colour family and different scales.
  • Everything matching and brand new. A vintage-style piece or an old frame makes it feel collected rather than bought as a set.
  • Heavy, dark rooms with no relief. Pair deep greens and walnut with cream, linen and warm light.
  • Costume details: saddles, trophies and tartan on every surface. One gentle reference is enough.

Questions about heritage nurseries

What is a Ralph Lauren–style nursery?

It's the classic American heritage look: navy, forest, camel and cream, a stripe or a plaid, warm walnut furniture, brass and a touch of leather, with a horse or a hound in the art. Tailored and collected rather than themed.

What is an Americana nursery?

An Americana nursery takes its cue from the American country house: preppy stripes and checks, navy and forest with warm wood, and classic, hand-me-down pieces. It's easy to make calm by keeping the colours soft and the patterns in one family.

What is an English country nursery?

It's the gentle look of an old country house: vintage florals or toile, panelled or painted walls, warm wood, a classic metal or spindle crib and soft, faded colours. It sits at the romantic end of the heritage style.

How do I use horse art in a nursery without it looking themed?

Choose one or two refined pieces, such as soft horse sketches or a vintage-style print, and hang them over the crib or the dresser. Let checks, leather and warm wood carry the rest instead of horse motifs on every textile.

Does a heritage nursery work for a girl or a boy?

Both. Americana prep and equestrian lean to navy, forest and camel; English country to florals, toile and soft rose. Any of them can be made gender-neutral with forest, stone, linen and walnut.

Can you plan my heritage nursery for my room?

Yes. Nest, our nursery planner, designs your nursery in your style, then fits it to your exact room, colours and budget: three boards, your floor plan, every wall, the exact paint colours with codes, and a shopping list.
