gorgeous brown ottomans

The ottoman is one of the most underrated pieces in a nursery. It's where you rest your feet during a 2am feed. It's the extra seat when your partner pulls up a chair. It's the surface that holds the burp cloth, the monitor, the book you were reading before the baby woke up.

Brown ottomans work across almost every nursery palette — warm neutrals, earthy tones, cream-and-wood combos, boho layering. Done right, they look intentional. Done wrong, they look like an afterthought.

These are the 9 we'd actually specify. See how ottomans work inside complete nursery designs in our 450+ curated nurseries →

What to look for in a nursery ottoman

In our Boston studio, we specify an ottoman in almost every nursery we design. It's one of the highest-utility purchases in the room — and one of the easiest to get right.

Size. A nursery ottoman doesn't need to be large. Most rooms have limited floor space. A round stool or a compact rectangular piece — 18–24" across — fits beside a glider without crowding the room.

Height. It should sit level with or slightly below the seat height of your glider. Too low and you're stretching. Too high and you're uncomfortable within the first five minutes.

Fabric. Boucle, sherpa, and faux shearling are the right textures for a nursery. They photograph beautifully, they feel good underfoot, and they clean up well enough for a room that's going to see spills. Avoid tight weaves that snag — and avoid anything dry-clean only.

Function. Storage ottomans earn their keep in small rooms. If you're tight on space, an ottoman with a lidded interior handles extra swaddles, burp cloths, and the small pile of things that shouldn't be on the floor but always are.

9 brown ottomans worth buying

1. Chocolate Brown Boucle Stool

Handcrafted and wrapped in nubby boucle, this piece earns its place on texture alone. The tone — a deep chocolate brown — anchors a room without competing with other finishes. Works in modern, organic, and boho nurseries. A high-design pick at a reasonable price.

2. Zena Round Standard Ottoman

The Zena is compact — sized right for a snug corner or the space beside a glider. The warm brown finish reads like a dark truffle; the burnt birch legs add a natural, grounded quality. This is the pick when the room is tight and you need something that doesn't eat floor space.

3. Jake Swivel Stool

The swivel is genuinely useful — not a gimmick. In a nursery where you're turning from glider to side table to crib, a stool that rotates with you saves effort. It doubles as a side table when you don't need the seat. Clean silhouette, brown finish, works in modern spaces.

4. Brown Boucle Storage Ottoman

The storage version of the boucle ottoman. The interior holds extra throws, burp cloths, or anything you want out of sight. Boucle exterior, generous weight capacity, works as extra seating when the room fills up. This is the one to specify when the nursery is short on storage and long on style requirements.

5. Rounded Pedestal Ottoman

A sleek pedestal base and soft upholstered top. This one reads as furniture — not just functional — which matters in a nursery that doubles as a design statement. Versatile enough to work as a footrest, extra seat, or surface for a small lamp tray.

6. Light Brown Sherpa Ottoman

Sherpa fabric is the right call for families. It's soft, it's forgiving, and it holds its look after cleaning better than most upholstery. The light brown tone keeps it warm without going dark. This is the pick for parents who want something cozy over something sculptural.

7. Small Brown Ottoman Stool

Wooden base, cushioned top, small footprint. The wood-and-upholstery combination works across a wider range of nursery styles than fabric-only pieces — natural, Scandinavian, or transitional rooms all absorb it easily. Works as a footrest, a stool, or a casual side surface.

8. Handwoven Upholstered Brown Stool

This is the elevated pick. 100% cotton with natural yarn, buffalo leather piping, and round ball feet in solid mango wood. It reads antique in the best way — like something that belongs in a curated room, not a big-box nursery. If the aesthetic is warm, layered, and slightly European, this is the one.

9. Faux Shearling Teddy Fabric Ottoman

Soft faux shearling, contemporary silhouette, brown tone that leans warm. This works as an ottoman or a standalone stool — the shape is flexible enough for both. The material is the draw: relaxed, tactile, and low-maintenance. A good fit for boho, organic, or casual modern nurseries.

Where to put the ottoman

Across 450+ nurseries, the ottoman earns its place every time — not just as a footrest, but as the flexible extra seat when the glider is occupied and the room suddenly has three people in it.

Beside the glider is the default position. But a small round stool also works at the foot of the crib, beside a floor lamp, or tucked into the corner of a reading zone.

If you're building out the full room and want help tracking what you're adding, our nursery organization tool keeps every product, task, and decision in one place.

FAQ

Do you need an ottoman in a nursery?

You don't need one. But after the first few weeks, you'll want one. Feet need somewhere to rest during feeds. Guests need somewhere to sit. An ottoman handles both without taking up much room.

What size ottoman works in a nursery?

18–24" across is the right range for most nurseries. A round stool is easier to position than a rectangular piece in a tight room. Match the height to your glider seat height — level or just below.

What fabric is best for a nursery ottoman?

Boucle, sherpa, and faux shearling are the three we recommend. They're soft, durable enough for daily use, and photograph well. Avoid dry-clean-only materials and tight weaves that snag easily.

Can a brown ottoman work in a neutral nursery?

Brown is one of the most versatile neutral tones for a nursery. Warm browns anchor cream, white, sage, and terracotta palettes without competing. A mid-tone brown boucle or sherpa piece fits into almost any nursery color story.
